The technique of building a wall with stones lying around has been used in many parts of the UK. Sometimes, it was used simply as a means of doing something with a large number of stones spoiling an area of land. Other times, it was a way of defining a boundary.
Because the type of stones found depends on the underlying geology of an area, each area has it own style of wall-building. John Robertson, of Robbo Services, has built dry stone walls in Yorkshire, the Scottish Borders and the Highlands, though, strictly speaking, in Scotland they are dry stane dykes.
A dry stone feature can provide the focal point for a garden and last for years without needing any maintenance.
